Whatnot Beginners Complete Guide: Profile Setup, Browsing Lives & First Purchase

1. Set up your profile

Once you download the app and make an account go to your profile. Add a picture, write a short description and choose the categories you like so the feed shows things that interest you. Then go to Account, Payments & Shipping and add a payment method and a shipping address—these are needed before you can buy anything.

2. Look at shows

On the main screen you will see live streams that match your interests. Use the search box or the category options to find items or sellers. Click any show to join away. You can talk to the seller and other buyers while its happening.

3. Make your purchase

Most items are sold through auctions. When an item is available, swipe the "Bid" button or tap "Custom" to set your bid. The person with the bid when the time runs out wins and the payment method you saved is charged automatically. You can also buy items that are listed as "Buy It " After you win check your order, under Activity > Purchases. The seller will send it. You will get updates.

That's it—you're ready to shop live on Whatnot!

How to Bid and Win Live Auctions on Whatnot

Before joining any live show, add a valid payment method and shipping address under Account > Payments & Shipping. Without these, you cannot bid.

Bidding tips

In a live auction, swipe the yellow Bid button to place the next minimum increment (increments rise with the current price). For more control, tap Custom and set a Max Bid — Whatnot will automatically bid for you in increments up to your limit without going over. Watch for standard auctions (timer extends on late bids) versus sudden-death auctions (skull icon, no extensions). Decide your maximum budget beforehand because all bids are binding.

Real-time interaction

Use the chat to ask the seller about condition, authenticity, or details. Engaging politely can also build rapport.

Payment process

When you win, your saved payment method is charged automatically for the winning bid + shipping (shown under the item) + any applicable tax. There is no separate checkout.

After winning

Check the order under Activity > Purchases for confirmation and tracking. Sellers typically ship within a few business days. Monitor shipping updates in the app. If issues arise, contact the seller promptly through the order page.

Stay focused, bid responsibly, and enjoy the live energy!

Whatnot Seller Starter Guide: From Zero to Your First Live Show

Apply for seller access

Create a free Whatnot account in the app, then tap "+ Sell" (or visit whatnot.com/apply-to-sell). Complete the short application with your details, planned categories, and inventory info. Most applicants get approved quickly. You'll also need to verify your identity (government ID) and link a bank account for payouts.

Prepare your inventory

Gather items you plan to sell. Take clear photos from multiple angles, write accurate descriptions, and add them to your shop or show queue with starting bids and shipping profiles. Have packing supplies and the ability to print labels ready.

Set up your live show

Schedule your first show in the Seller Hub: choose a catchy title, eye-catching thumbnail, category, date, and time. Set shipping defaults. Use Rehearsal Mode or a private stream to practice. Good lighting and a stable camera setup help (you don't have to show your face—many sellers film just the products).

Attract buyers

Promote your upcoming show on social media and within Whatnot. During the stream, engage the chat, run auctions, offer giveaways, and keep energy high. Consistent scheduling and clear product presentation build a following fast.

Once live, sell, ship promptly, and get paid after buyers receive their orders. Start small and refine as you go.

Whatnot Payments, Shipping & Protection Guide

Payments

Buyers pay with credit or debit cards (plus other supported methods). There is no buyer's premium— the final bid or price plus shipping and applicable tax is what you pay. Sellers pay an 8% commission on the item price (varies slightly by category) plus a payment processing fee of roughly 2.9% + $0.30 on the total order value.

Shipping

Shipping costs are calculated based on package weight, size, and distance (often via USPS for U.S. orders). Buyers normally pay shipping unless the seller offers free or reduced rates during a show. Sellers must ship within two business days and can add optional insurance or signature confirmation for extra protection.

Returns & Buyer/Seller Protection

Whatnot offers strong Buyer Protection covering items that are not as described, damaged, missing, counterfeit, defective, or never received. Claims must usually be filed within the earlier of 30 days from purchase or 14 days from delivery (shorter windows apply to categories like cards, sneakers, and plants). Returns are often required; prepaid labels are typically provided.

Sellers are protected against refund abuse, chargebacks, and verified carrier failures, though they remain responsible for late shipments or misrepresented items. Many issues are first handled through Seller Provided Support before Whatnot steps in.

Whatnot Pro Tips: Discover Deals, Engage Smartly & Fix Common Issues

Discover good items efficiently

Use the personalized "For You" feed, follow favorite sellers and categories, and bookmark upcoming shows or product searches for notifications. Set Max Bids or pre-bids so you don't miss auctions. Search by keyword, brand, or category and save frequent searches.

Community interaction

Join live chats to ask questions and build rapport with sellers. Follow friends via contact sync, enable activity status if desired, and tip sellers during shows. Stay positive—Whatnot enforces community guidelines against spam or harassment.

Notification settings

Go to Account > Settings to customize alerts for followed sellers going live, bid updates, order status, and promotions. Turn off unnecessary ones to avoid overload while keeping key deal alerts active.

Account security

Use a strong unique password and enable Account Controls (with PIN) for spend or watch-time limits. Never share login details, and report suspicious activity. Stick to official in-app messaging.

Troubleshooting

Update or reinstall the app for glitches. For stream issues, hard-close and reopen the app. Check internet connection for bidding/payment problems. Contact support via Activity > Contact Us or the Help Center for order or account issues.

These habits help you shop and sell more effectively while staying safe.
