Tracing Your Family History Has Never Been Easier

Finding your origins no longer involves stacks of dusty archives and miles to climb through endless paperwork. Never has it been easier to follow and construct family history with FamilySearch Tree.

FamilySearch Tree is a free, collaborative platform where anyone can contribute and build on their family tree in just a few clicks. It allows us to add relatives, upload photographs and record events in life from our device be it a computer or mobile phone which means we are able to do genealogy anywhere.

Perhaps its biggest advantage is intelligent record matching. The software scans through billions of records throughout history, and proposes any documents - like a birth certificate, census entries or marriage record that may belong to your family members. Now it takes minutes instead of years of research.

The experience is thus better when done with collaboration. FamilySearch Tree is a collaborative worldwide tree, making it easy for relatives and researchers to add information, correct mistakes, or attach sources–all available globally. Every contribution adds to the story of your family.

The best part: the platform is completely free. FamilySearch Tree simplifies tracking your family history, regardless of whether you are a novice inquiring into your grandparents or an advanced genealogist.

Effortlessly Building Your Family Tree

The app helps you easily build your family tree by searching for and adding relatives from the mobile device. It is a free tool which syncs within the massive database on FamilySearch, and allows you to begin with yourself by entering what information you know (names, birth dates and locations for living or deceased relatives) right from simple "Add" buttons for parents/spouses/or children.

When you insert a deceased ancestor, the app automatically hunts through billions of international registers to discover possible matches (or current profiles) within their common family tree. Search for a match, review the historical data and connect immediately yourself to generations of existing research. The integration search capabilities also allow you to see if there are relatives already in your system that may not have a duplicate record. That combination of manual entry and smart discovery is what allows growing your family tree to be intuitive, private for living relatives, and cross-platform collaborative.

How You Are Connected to Ancestors

When you insert a deceased family member in the platform, FamilySearch tries to match that with its records about this person. FamilySearch Tree is a free online platform from FamilySearch that enables users to build and share their trees.

You input the name, birth date and place of a deceased ancestor into the system that then graphically scours its vast international records. It might be matched against census records, birth certificates, burial notes and other historical files on your family member. These matched records may provide the missing pieces to fill in your family narrative, and even help you identify previously unknown branches of your tree.

While many paid ancestry tools have services hidden behind a paywall, there is no set of core FamilySearch Tree functions that are locked away. It means that it brings users together: many people can collaborate on editing the same tree and share newly found evidence. This intelligent matching function greatly reduces the threshold for novices, and can help ordinary users trace their family roots without tedious research work.

Uncover New Relatives in the Shared FamilySearch Community Tree

The world's largest free collaborative family tree makes it very easy to find other relatives and descendants you may not have known about at all. This collaborative universal tree, populated by millions of enthusiasts and history buffs is stored behind a paywall for the few at any particular moment but an open system that aims to record every deceased ancestor in one place rather than keep private family trees locked away like jail cells.

Once you add basic information on your family, the system then automatically checks against billions of historical records and existing community data. It will link you to distant cousins, complete branches of descendant trees that are barren repositories filled only with one empty name and indicate relatives whose lives may have escaped recording. All details related to live individuals remain fully secure, so you can enjoy exploring your interests without the concern of personal information being made public.

Your tree is growing as new users all over the world add photos, dates and source-verified Facts each day. You might even share that ancestor with a relative you never knew, which elevates the experience of solo research into an embraceable family discovery.

Map My Ancestors in FamilySearch Tree

FamilySearch International funded solely on donations that enables users to build, edit but also discover their family tree navigate billions of historical records. Some of its best features include the "Map My Ancestors" option, which allows you to see your family history as it unfolds—where significant moments in life (like births, marriages and deaths) happen can be plotted out on a map for visual reference.

That is the purpose of this mapping tool, which gives users a pro-active way to explore their heritage. The map you see when you open the app and click on Map My Ancestors will be centred around your location (within a 100 mile radius). Each ancestor is represented by a different icon: your location by a blue dot, individual ancestors with people icons and multiple ancestors clustered in an area are shown using blue cluster (dot) classifying them. You can zoom in or out to find more and click any icon for names and event details.

You can search for a particular ancestor by name, and the map will place icons documenting each recorded life event—births, marriages or burial—on it. When you click on an event, greater context comes up helping give insight into where and how your ancestors lived. There is even the option for burial locations to enhance map. This is particularly handy for discovering your ancestors who were near you, planning a heritage trip or even tracing how many of your family members had migrated across regions/continents to settle where they ultimately did.

In other words, FamilySearch Tree's "Map My Ancestors" session is a sophisticated tool that presents ancestors and data in easily understandable terms—towns and states fill-in the blank for you.
