Merlin Bird ID

Merlin Bird ID is a free bird identification application developed by Cornell Lab of Ornithology for global bird lovers. Supported by machine learning and the massive eBird database, it offers multiple easy identification ways: recognizing birds via photos, bird calls, or simple questions about bird features, and it supports offline use outdoors. Its high accuracy mainly comes from experienced birdwatchers.

They sort, label and check countless bird photos and audio files, forming reliable training materials for the app. Covering most bird species worldwide, this tool suits both beginners and veteran birders. Users can record spotted birds, check regional bird distribution and learn detailed bird knowledge conveniently during outdoor bird watching.

Build Your Personal Birding Journal

The app is more than just a bird identification tool—it's your very own personal birder's assistant to help you keep track of all your sightings and create an individual life list. Lingering birds can also be recorded by capturing a photo, sound clip or simply clicking on the Merlin step-by-step ID. The app then records the species, date and location to create a running list of every bird you have confidently identified in-situ.

On the app, your personal life list is always available to you from its menu so that you can look back on past sightings, remember prize encounters and see how your birding accomplishments have built up over time. Every highlighted entry is a permanent testament to your journey into the natural land. Merlin also connects with eBird, allowing you to share your observations as a part of one of the largest citizen science data bases on Earth.

The best part? Merlin is free. It makes any bird sighting a special memory that lasts, whether you are new to the backyard and family feeding experience or an ardent birder visiting different habitats. Work on your personal list from today onwards, so all the birds you find will become everlasting memoirs of your journey.

How Merlin's AI Knows Birds From Photo and Sound

By employing Photo ID and Sound ID tools to convert your smartphone into an ornithologist in a pocket. Both features are powered by Visipedia and use machine learning to compare what you capture with species that it has already learned. Stopping hand coded rules and training Merlin on gigantic citizen-science datasets: millions of bird photos/audio clips uploaded by Birders to eBird. org, and then archived at the Cornell Lab's Macaulay Library.

Photo ID uses computer vision to identify plumage, shape and posture; Sound ID converts recordings into spectrograms then classifies them like images, telling who is singing live. The shortlist, then. Merlin's is derived against the background of humongous datasets that your average human curator may never fathom in their lifetime; but it still remains surprisingly accurate because this training data was painstakingly curated and annotated by flesh-and-blood experts. The end result is an entirely free and offline-capable field guide that learns as much from the global birding community as a software code.

Birders' Wisdom: The Core Power of Merlin Bird ID

Its outstanding identification accuracy does not merely rely on advanced machine learning, but heavily depends on contributions from passionate, experienced birders worldwide.

Merlin delivers the most accurate results thanks to experienced birders, who curate and annotate sightings, photos, and sounds, who are the true magic behind Merlin. Massive bird images, field recordings and observation logs collected by bird lovers are sorted, labeled and proofread by skilled birders, forming the reliable database supporting Merlin's recognition system. These enthusiasts verify details like feather features, vocal characteristics and active habitats, removing misleading data and guaranteeing reliable matching outcomes.

With human expert sorting complementing algorithm analysis, Merlin works stably for field birding, even supporting offline recognition in remote wild areas. Casual observers get precise species answers easily, while veteran birders gain a convenient tool to record findings. Without careful curation from global birders, Merlin could never maintain such trustworthy performance for bird lovers across continents.

The AI-Powered Birding Companion Powered by eBird

Merlin Bird ID is a groundbreaking free app that allows you to identify birds by sight and sound — changing the way people engage with nature. One of the unique features with Merlin is that unlike all other birding apps, which are powered by millions of contributors and documentation or crowdsourced content; MERLIN is actually powered by eBird, which would be perhaps the largest structured (only) searchable database on birds — in terms biodiversity sight records, sounds and photos for sites across nearly any search option you prefer.

There are 4 approaching ways to help identify it: sound, photo, descriptive questions and location-based lists. New for this year and a major point of differentiation is its Sound ID technology that uses artificial intelligence to identify over 450 North American bird species in real time even amidst multiple birds singing at the same moment. It turns sounds into visual data to convert audio recordings into spectrograms, which allows users of the app to match those with our eBird library. Its of course Photo ID, which analyzes images fed to it via machine learning trained on millions of user- submitted photos.

If there is one thing that makes Merlin special it is the billion-plus eBird observations from which we built an understanding of where and when species are likely present in your area. All this new intelligence driven by AI and crowdsource data, makes Merlin extremely precise and The Best for novices or experts alike! Merlin, available free for iOS and Android devices, not only answers questions about which birds you see but also provides educational resources, making it a must-have guide to local birding in any corner of the world.

Your New Species in a Day

It provides you with everyday bird identification fun, through a free mobile app developed by the world-famous Cornell Lab of Ornithology called Merlin Bird ID. BirdNet is primarily powered by AI, which can identify birds both visually (photo) and aurally (sound), but one of its most engaging features is the personalization with a daily "Bird of the Day".

The app gives you a new bird each day to search for based on where you are and what time of year it is. This isn't trivia, as the Bird of the Day focuses on a bird species you might see nearby and it's an invite to get outside and take note. The Cornell Lab summarizes this with "What is your bird for the day?" and nearly a million have already played around with it as part of finding their daily field bird.

The Bird of the Day has an honorable mention in Merlin, which now features a permanent “Observation Deck,” swipeable simple home screen feed that includes mesmerizing images and what to spot this season. You can also tout your new bird finds to friends and family right from the app, making it easy to test who found what first or celebrate milestones together. If you are looking for a way to get daily natural history information in your life, this feature provides an easy gesture that is both engaging and educational: birds are the stars of every day.
